Stravinsky's Pulcinella for bassoon and piano
Igor Stravinsky's 1920 ballet, Pulcinella, is often considered the composer's first neoclassical work and contains some of the most rewarding writing for the bassoon in the orchestral literature. Stravinsky himself arranged his ballet into several suites, including one for violin and piano and another for cello and piano. Using all versions of Pulcinella as source material, I arranged a new suite of the piece for bassoon and piano, published by TrevCo Music Publishing in 2021. In addition to the ballet's most enchanting melodies, the bassoon in my arrangement plays many of the familiar solos and difficult excerpts from the original orchestral bassoon part.
My arrangement is available for purchase from TrevCo Music and Forrests Music.
During the 2021 International Double Reed Society Conference, I gave a lecture called Stravinsky as Arranger: Pulcinella, Suite Italienne, and a New Arrangement for Bassoon, in which I discussed how Stravinsky arranged his own music and the music of other composers throughout his career, and how his arranging expertise led to the creation of the many version of Pulcinella.
I recorded my arrangement with pianist Dror Baitel in 2021. Watch it here:
